Explantation surgery, or breast implant removal, is a specialised procedure tailored to the unique needs and desires of each patient. Performed under general anesthesia, implant removal typically takes one to two hours to complete. The reasons for choosing this surgery may vary, including discomfort, health concerns, or a preference for a natural breast appearance.
The implant removal process begins with an incision made along the existing scar lines from the original breast augmentation, minimising additional scarring. The practitioner then meticulously removes the implant, and if necessary, the capsule surrounding it may also be excised. This careful approach ensures a clean surgical area, with tissues closed using precise sutures.
In some cases, implant removal may be combined with additional procedures like a breast lift (mastopexy) or capsulectomy to address specific concerns such as sagging or encapsulation. These complementary procedures enhance the overall results, providing a more comfortable and aesthetically pleasing outcome. By focusing on individualised care and employing best practices, explantation surgery offers a safe and effective solution for those seeking implant removal.
Disclaimer. Every surgery has its own procedure specific risks. Some general risks that can potentially occur across a number of procedures include.
Scarring. Surgery may result in visible scarring. The extent varies based on individual healing characteristics and surgical technique.
Unsatisfactory Outcome. While our team strives for the best possible outcome, individual responses to surgery and healing can lead to results that may not meet expectations.
Bleeding. There's a risk of bleeding during or after surgery. If severe, it may require additional surgery to control.
Infection. Although rare, post-operative infections can occur after breast augmentation. It's crucial to follow all post-operative care instructions to minimise this risk.
Nerve Damage. There's a small risk of nerve damage during breast augmentation, which could affect nipple sensation. Most changes are temporary and improve over time.
Seroma. A seroma, a pocket of clear serous fluid, can develop after surgery. Most seromas resolve on their own, but some may require medical intervention.
Pain. Some degree of discomfort is expected after surgery. However, this is typically managed effectively with prescribed pain relief medication.
Bruising and Swelling. Post-operative bruising and swelling are common after breast augmentation. These symptoms usually subside gradually over a few weeks.
Anaesthetic Complications. As with any procedure involving anaesthesia, there's a risk of complications such as allergic reactions or breathing problems or even death.
Remember, it's essential to discuss these risks and complications with your practitioner during the consultation process. Dr. Hatem believes in providing realistic and educative information about the potential risks and recovery process of breast augmentation. We encourage you to take the time to understand the procedure fully and ask any questions you may have. It is recommended that you seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner before proceeding with any surgical procedure.
During the recovery period, you may experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort, which can be managed with prescribed medication. You will also be required to wear a surgical bra or compression garment to support the healing process.
